Not knowing the specifics of your journey it is hard to give an accurate answer. Go to http://nationalrail.co.uk

From there you can check train times and ticket prices.

Advance tickets are usually cheaper unless you are making the journey to and from on the same day.

A Saver Return from Guildford to Manchester costs £69.20. Note that there r two types of Saver tickets for this journey, one routed via London & one routed via Reading & Birmingham, so make sure u get the correct version for the route u want to use.

If u want a direct train from Guildford to Manchester & back (which there r very few of), u need a ticket that is valid via Reading & Birmingham.

There r time restrictions on Saver tickets on weekdays. The earliest train u could get from Guildford would be at 0803 (if travelling via London) & the earliest u could get from Manchester would be at 0946 (also via London).

If u need to travel earlier on a weekday, u need to buy a fully flexible Standard Open Return ticket, which costs £125.00 for the Birmingham route & an astonishing £261.00 for the London route.

The outward half of a Saver Return ticket is valid only on the date printed on the ticket; the return half is valid for one month after this date (so u can return at any time within a month). Both halves of a Standard Open Return ticket r valid for one month.

If u know the exact dates u want to travel on, & do not mind booking in advance & being restricted to specific trains, u could buy Advance tickets. These r only available as singles (so u need to buy two, one for each half of the journey) & start from £21.50, though u need to book many weeks in advance to get one at this price.

Surrey is a very large county with about a hundred stations in it (especially if you count the London Stations which are within the old surrey borders) and manchester has a number of stations as well, could you be a little more specific?
Also when will you be travelling, what day, time of day, and returning, which route do you wish to take? are you travelling through London and using the underground? All these factors affect the price of the journey.
Good Luck
